  • Nagorno-Karabakh conflict discussed during the OSCE Summit

    On 1 and 2 December 2010, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) held its first summit in eleven years in the Kazakh capital, Astana. The summit brought together leading officials from 68 countries to discuss a range of security issues, including the unresolved conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh. A Joint Statement on this issue was signed by the Heads of Delegation of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair Countries and the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

    The summit concluded with the publication of the ‘Astana Commemorative Declaration', consisting of a reaffirmation of the Organisation's fundamental values and principles.

  • Presentation of the Armenia and the Nagorno Karabakh polling results in Brussels

    On Monday 29 November 2010, EuFoA Secretary General Michael Kambeck and Andrew Cooper, CEO of the UK based opinion polling company Populus, presented the results of the Comparative Opinion Polls held in Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh on Socio-Political Issues and Foreign Relations. Following the briefing, which was held at EuFoA's Brussels office, invitees had the opportunity to ask questions regarding the polling results.

  • Joint EuFoA-AGBU Roundtable Briefing with the Armenian Ombudsman

    On 16 November 2010, European Friends of Armenia (EuFoA) and the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU, www.agbu.org) held a joint policy briefing at EuFoA's Brussels office with Mr Armen Harutyunyan, Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia and Ms Jacqueline Hale (Open Society Institute) as discussant. The NGOs and think tanks present commended the Ombudsman's contribution to the democratisation process in Armenia and his frank and credible analysis.

  • European Commission releases a report about Turkey’s status in the accession negotiations

    On Tuesday 9 November 2010, the European Commission issued a report on progress made by Turkey in preparing for EU membership. The document contained some points regarding the relations between Turkey and its neighbour Armenia. These references mainly concerned the relationship in the sphere of human rights and foreign policy.

  • Round-table with the Armenian Prime Minister

    On Friday 12 November, Prime Minister of Armenia, Mr Tigran Sargasyan, visited EuFoA's Brussels office. During the course of this visit, the Prime Minister, as well as the Armenian Ambassador to the EU and Belgium Mr Avet Adonts and the Armenian Minister of Economy, Mr Nerses Yerityan, participated in a roundtable discussion. Representatives from think tanks, diplomatic circles, NGOs and Media also participated in the event. The discussion was varied, covering a number of topics concerning Armenian domestic and foreign affairs.

  • Concert of the Caucasian Chamber Orchestra in the European Parliament

    On Tuesday, 26 October 2010, MEP Milan Cabrnoch, Chairman of the Delegation to the EU-Armenia, EU-Azerbaijan and EU-Georgia PCCs, organised a concert by the Caucasian Chamber Orchestra in the European Parliament in Brussels. The event was held in collaboration with, among others, the European Friends of Armenia (EuFoA), the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR), the Mission of the Republic of Armenia to the EU, the Mission of Georgia to the EU and the EU-Georgia Business Council (EUGBC).

  • Azerbaijani President now also questions current territory of the Republic of Armenia

    In a recent address to the Cabinet, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Alliyev has stated that Armenia is located in ancient Azerbaijani lands by emphasising that Zangezur, Irevan khanate belong to Azerbaijan. He has also emphatically put the status of Nagorno-Karabakh in doubt by discussing the origin of the name Karabakh, with the goal to prove that Nagorno-Karabakh in reality belongs to Azerbaijan. In addition, he blamed Armenia for creating the second Armenian state on the historical Azerbaijani lands.

  • Recent BACC trip strengthens economic ties between Europe and Armenia

    Belgian-Armenian Chamber of Commerce (BACC) has recently organised a trip to Armenia. The mission was accompanied by a delegation of more than 50 people from various Belgian business organisations. Among the participants were EuFoA's Europe-Armenia Economic Advisory Council members, Philippe Suinen and Valéry Safarian. Professor Bernard Coulie, member of EuFoA's Europe-Armenia Advisory Council, attended the trip as well. [more information in French]
