Round-table on the Election Observation Mission (EOM) of the Nagorno-Karabakh Presidential Elections
On 19 July 2012, Presidential Elections took place in Nagorno-Karabakh (NK). While the NK Republic is internationally not recognised, European Friends of Armenia welcomes the wish of the de-facto authorities to organise local self-government based on democratic principles. This wish has been underlined by inviting a large number of international observers, including a group of eight set up by EuFoA. The observation mission organised by EuFoA was a short-term observation and included the Election Day, parts of the electoral counting procedures and interviews with candidates and other observers. During the round-table the importance of providing technical assistance and election observation for future local elections in Nagorno-Karabakh was stressed.
Following the introductory remarks of Dr Michael Kambeck, EuFoA Secretary General, MEP Dr Eleni Theocharous, member of the EOM shared her impressions of the elections. The meeting focused then on the presentation of the full EOM report prepared by the EuFoA Election Observation Mission and based on its interim conclusions. The report was subsequently discussed among the over 30 invitees and published on the same day.
